The opening of the gravitational wave window onto the Universe has created a number of surprising finds right from the start. I will briefly review the highlights so far, continue with the 'forecast' for the next observing season of LIGO/Virgo and highlight the Dutch astronomical contribution of the BlackGEM array of wide-field survey telescopes, operational on La Silla as of early 2019. Finally I will return to the opportunities gravitational wave detections give us to solve some long-standing issues in stellar evolution and stellar populations.
