About me

Hi there! My name is Naadiyah Jagga and I am a Ph.D. candidate in Astrophysics at York University working with Prof. dr. Adam Muzzin on JWST galaxies. I earned a bachelors's and master's degree in Astronomy at Leiden University, in The Netherlands. I chose to follow the research track for my master's, which allowed me to extend my knowledge not only in Astronomy but also in Physics and Computer Science.

At Leiden Observatory both degrees are focused on research; providing a wide set of skills. In my second year of the bachelor, I observed with four other students the Hα and SII in HII regions with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) at the Roque de los Muchachos observatory in La Palma to study the ratio in relation to their age. Then, my final year of the bachelor was filled with a study abroad for one semester to The University of Western Australia, in Perth, followed by a bachelor project on difference imaging of MASCARA observations under supervision of Prof. dr. Ignas Snellen.

In the first year of my master's, I worked with Dr. Yamila Miguel on modeling the internal structures of Jupiter and Saturn to examine different equations of state for ice. For my final master research project, I studied the bias in the stellar masses of theoretical galaxies with Prof. dr. Henk Hoekstra and Dr. Alessandro Sonnenfeld. We explored the systematic uncertainties in the stellar mass when galaxies are split by color.

Since 2019 until June 2022 I have been a teaching assistant for several courses in general science, design thinking, and Astronomy. Next to this, I am active in dancing as a hobby, a member of the Party for the Animals to support the animal welfare, and a member of the Leiden Observatory Sustainability Committee.
