De spreker
Neal J. Evans II is de Edward M. Randall, Jr. M.D. Centennial hoogleraar aan de Universiteit van Texas in Austin. Na zijn natuurkunde promotie aan de Universiteit van Californië in Berkeley in 1973 en een postdoc positie bij het California Institute of Technology werd hij hoogleraar aan de Universiteit van Texas in Austin, waar hij ook directeur van het instituut is geweest. Hij onderzoekt de vorming van sterren en planeten met radio en infrarode waarnemingen. Hij doceert vakken over kosmologie en leven en over buitenaards leven. Op dit moment is hij voorzitter van het bestuur van de Atacama Large Millimeter Array. In 2012 werd hij benoemd tot Fellow van de American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Het onderwerp
Door tal van opmerkelijke ontwikkelingen is er nu een geavanceerde technologische samenleving op de derde planeet rond een obscure ster, in de buitenwijken van een doorsnee spiraalvormig sterrenstelsel. Zijn we de enigen of komen dit soort ontwikkelingen overal voor in het heelal? We hebben geen antwoord op deze vraag, maar we zullen in deze lezing bespreken welke omstandigheden nodig zijn, nieuwe ontdekkingen presenteren en de vragen stellen die nog opgelost moeten worden.
De Oortlezing
De jaarlijkse Oortlezing, ter herinnering aan deze befaamde Nederlandse sterrenkundige, wordt georganiseerd door de Stichting Het Jan Hendrik Oort Fonds en de Sterrewacht Leiden. De lezing belicht een actueel sterrenkundig onderwerp en is bedoeld voor een breed publiek met interesse in de astronomie. De lezing vindt plaats op 15 mei 2014 vanaf 20:00u in het Groot Auditorium van de Universiteit Leiden, Rapenburg 73, Leiden.

The speaker
Neal J. Evans II is the Edward M. Randall, Jr., M.D. Centennial Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. After receiving his PhD in Physics at the University of California, Berkeley in 1973 and a postdoctoral fellowship at the California Institute of Technology, he began a faculty position at the University of Texas at Austin, where he has served as Department Chair. His research focuses on the origin of stars and planetary systems, using radio and infrared observations. He teaches courses on cosmology and life and on extraterrestrial life. He currently serves as Chair of the Board overseeing the Atacama Large Millimeter Array. In 2012, he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
The subject
Remarkable developments have resulted in an advanced technological civilization on the third planet out from an obscure star in the outskirts of a garden-variety spiral galaxy. Are we alone or are such developments common in the Universe? We have no answers to this question, but we will review the necessary conditions, explore some new information, and pose the questions that still need to be addressed.
The Oort Lecture
he Oort Lecture is an annual event, in memory of the famous Dutch astronomer, organized by the Jan Hendrik Oort foundation and Leiden Observatory. The lecture deals with an astronomical subject of current interest and is intended for a mixed audience with a general interest in astronomy. This lecture takes place on May 15, 2014 starting 20:00h in the Groot Auditorium van de Universiteit Leiden, Rapenburg 73, Leiden.
