In memory of dr. Carolina Ödman

The staff, postdocs and students of Leiden Observatory were distressed by the sad news that Carolina Ödman, Professor of Astrophysics at the University of the Western Cape, passed away this morning, November 15. Carolina worked at the Sterrewacht from 2005 until 2009. While at the Sterrewacht she built up the Universe Awareness programme into an activity that reached more than 400,000 young children in more than 60 countries. For this she received the Science Prize for Online Resources in Education (SPORE) in 2012 from Science Magazine. She was a remarkable inspirational person with many impressive achievements and a beautiful personality that we are privileged to have known and worked with on our staff. During the last few years Carolina fought a brave fight against pancreatic cancer together with her husband Kevin Govender and their two young sons. Their courage was highlighted in this recent film about her made by UWC (linked below). We offer our deepest sympathy to Kevin, their boys, their family and friends. We need more people like Carolina to make the world a better place.
