Astronomy is a data-driven discipline. We are facing an unprecedented growth in the volume and complexity of this data, coming from instruments and simulations. Its effective exploration, mining and interpretation requires unprecedented expertise and novel strategies. Some of the upcoming challenges are addressed effectively with artificial intelligence.
This meeting is motivated by the rapid increase in interest in AI at the Sterrewacht, and its potential for transforming the way we work and think about data and their acquisition.
Naively considered, there are four critical aspects of AI relevant to astronomy. These include high-performance computing, deep learning, image processing, and big data.
In a diverse program with local and international speakers we hope to
initiate interest and raise the awareness about AI in astronomy and
science in general.
