Postdoctoral position in computational galaxy formation

Leiden Observatory invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to work on problems related to the formation and evolution of galaxies and large-scale structure using hydrodynamical simulations.

The successful applicant will join the Dutch 'Dark Universe Science Collaboration' that aims to exploit data from the upcoming Euclid space telescope, which is designed to study dark matter, dark energy, and galaxy evolution.

The work will be carried out in the cosmological simulations group of Matthieu Schaller and Joop Schaye, in collaboration with the observational cosmology and/or galaxy evolution groups at Leiden and/or other Dutch astronomy departments working on Euclid science.

We particularly aim to take advantage of the upcoming COLIBRE cosmological, hydrodynamical simulations, which are our next generation simulations following our EAGLE simulation project. Compared with EAGLE, COLIBRE models more physical processes, uses more particles and larger volumes, and spans a wider range of resolutions.

The appointment will be for two years initially, but it will be renewed for a third year in case of satisfactory performance. The position comes with a competitive salary and full benefits. A starting date no later than September 2023 is preferred. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. by the starting date.

Leiden Observatory is the oldest university astronomy department in the world, and the largest astronomy department in the Netherlands. Leiden is a charming university town with international flair.

Fostering an inclusive community is a central element of the values and vision of Leiden University. Leiden University is committed to becoming an inclusive community which enables all students and staff to feel valued and respected and to develop their full potential.
